For some reason of all the sites I have visited since heavily getting into the internet in 1999 this one has the most eccentric overall appeal of any I have ever visited. The color scheme, the ramblings of a once active Syd and the passive aggresiveness from his brother Jeebus on various subjects have always fascinated me. Even though I have been loved and hated during my tenure here I still feel a sense of happiness everytime I read an old Syd article, especially the top 100 NES games of all time. As a 33 year old male with kids and entrenched fully into the real world this site always takes me back to a time where I feel even my own kids can't experience how awesome it was going into the world of video games when they were really starting to take off. I do not consider the true start of video games until the NES, Even though the 2600 came earlier I still feel the NES is the system that influenced gaming culture and still does to this day.

To me Syd and his family represent the true American 1980's working class family. From a nostalgia standpoint I feel his experience with the NES is the truest form of what excitement that system brought. We as 80's kids were in the trenches of a new technology that our parents had not grown up on or never experienced the way we were going to. We rented games from the local store, ate pizza and stayed up on friday nights looking for the game that could outdo Super Mario brothers or a game that we could talk about at school Monday morning. Our families were not rich and purely middle class from a Reagon standpoint. We as kids convincing them to buy a 50 dollar game was so much harder to do compared to spending 50 dollars now for our own children. The amount of heart and dedication we put into getting our own games the generation now will never know We were the generation that found creatives ways to entertain ourselves indoors in the most cost effective way. We werent into cars, we werent into hanging out at the local hot spot in town like our parents. We were the first generation of American children that brought card playing, video games and comics into the popular culture.

Syd's and Jeebus were the kind of guys you wish you knew growing up. They were the kind of kids you wish your family was friends with because you knew they had the cool games to play or were planning on doing so. They made the best of whatever game they had to play at the time when video game budgets in families were almost non existent. Their experience was no more unique than others if we get technical, but their experience means more because their creativeness in finding ways to entertain themselves in a world that was strictly middle class. While I am not into cards I find it as an extention of their childhood and its influences from the NES. They couldn't play the NES all the time so they found a way to take it on the go in a non conventional way. They kept the game going no matter what.

When Hacker died I think I was devastated on the level where I felt like he truly got this site and understood the spirit of it even though he was a generation behind us. There was something magical about the world Syd and Jeebus brought from their childhood to this forum and it felt like he appreciated it in the sweetest ways possible. People gave him shit for being to into it but I will always understood where he was coming from because this site taps into an unspoken vibe that we all felt at one time. The things we got excited about, the games that disappointed us, the shows we all watched since all of our parents either had over the air tv or basic cable. I was so into the Wonder Years and Video Games it was almost like fate that I would meet my future wife in 1995 after a viewing of the movie Clueless and playing Mortal Kombat 3 with her. I thought she looked like Winnie Cooper and was in love with her from that day forward.

While I did attempt to put into words what this site means to me I still don't feel I could properly put into words why this place is special to me at its core. Even though the level of inactivity is higher than its ever been this site can never be replaced or redone. It was lighting in a bottle from the start and as long as it is around I will always have a place where I can talk to friends and foes alike and know they lived the same culture I did and that we all understand each other on a subconscious levels thanks to Syd and Jeebus.

Wow. Well said.

I hate that I was so late to the game here (I blame Google for not finding the place for me when I went searching the forests of the web for "retro" stuff).

It may seem like a joke, but the truth is that we who enjoy a good nostalgia trip are finding that the very places we visited for those experiences have now reached a point of creating a nostalgia of their own. We find ourselves longing for the "good ole days" of the sites we visited to relive the "good ole days". Crazy how that happened.

The fact is that almost all sites like Syd's have experienced a creeping death. I have visited so many like it... like memorials to what used to be. Thousands of posts and users come and gone, preserved for posterity. Now they are just a shell of what they once were. It makes me genuinely sad.

I literally only come here to make fun of Cam's food choices and to hope for Space Fury to show up.

But seriously, my need for nostalgia is nearing the end. There was a time I'd cry with fond memories of video games, TV show, movies, etc.. and get emotional just hearing a certain song, but I'm far too busy and absorbed in real life to feel that way anymore.

I actually think an extreme attachment to nostalgia is unhealthy to be honest, I feel it can hold people back a great deal from growing as a person. You can disagree, but it's still probably true.

Maybe I'll have a nice nostalgia resurgence once my kid is all grown up and moved away and I'm older with less to do. Maybe I won't. I do miss the 80's like most people here, but if that's all you think about, you have to check into a mental health facility.

A long time ago GPFontaine put a post counter on my profile that goes down every time I post and I have to find out what happens when it hits zero. I literally come here for no other reason.

I agree. But I think that there is a difference between "attachment" (or a longing for) the past and a healthy appreciation and celebration of it. The latter has actually brought people together and sparked creativity, conversation, and friendships.

Beyond that, I have made a concerted effort to introduce my children to many things from my childhood, so that they can enjoy things that I enjoyed and, later in life, reminisce together on those things.

This was my goal with RetroDaze. To bring together people who appreciate and want to celebrate decades past. And, through that, meet new people, share memories, and develop friendships.

Inertia. Just to check things out. But yeah, Josh said it best. Most of us just grew up.

This site may be mostly nostalgia-based, but I think some of what keeps it going is the fact that many of us just want to hang out with each other for shits and giggles. The userbase may have dwindled, we may have grown up, but I still think you guys are fun~

Because I know someone will misinterpret this, I didn't mean "grow up" as "we lost interest in this stuff". I meant more that most of us now have adult responsibilities that take up a lot of our time. Jobs, spouses, kids, stuff like that. We're still into this stuff, we just don't have time for it.

Guess this is a good time for an "I'm not missing" post as any. I check the forums every few months to see what people are up to, but I've kind of just lost the energy to post on more than one message board at a time.

This is what kind of what happened with me, which is why I was getting shitty towards the end of my regular posting. I still like my video games and music but I've gotten out of the crotchety "everything new sucks" attitude.

I pop in every so often to get a re-taste of the site and forums I came to love. Still hoping that Syd (and company) get back to knocking out articles, but I know life gets in the way. Regardless, this is still my favorite little corner of the Internet. It's genuine in a way that other, larger sites aren't. I still dig the hell out of it.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

Because I have actual responsibilities, fucking around on the internet is a lower priority. But sometimes I have free time. Sometimes on my free time, I get drunk, just for the hell of it. Sometimes when I'm drunk, I remember and come back.

And right now I want to be in the final Forum Battle, and win some kind of 2D challenge against NS. Pipe dreams.

I do like the people too.

After I'm done with porn, I tend to just click through my old bookmarks for 10 minutes or so before going to bed.

But seriously, I have fond memories of a lot of people on this site. Not so fond memories of others. In any case, it takes me back to a simpler time in life. From all that's been posted already, I don't think I need to elaborate further.

Nostalgia, really. I remember reading the Mortal Kombat Extravaganza in 2010 and found myself checking out every other article Syd made in the span of about two weeks.

Didn't realize there was a forum until 2011 when I signed up.

I am 16 now.

That means I was 12 when I first signed up.

I cannot bring up the nerve to look at my old posts here.

I joined Sydlexia in 2008. In 2008, that means I was 16, Across all four of my accounts I don't think I ever made more than 1,500 posts in my entire time here. I don't really remember when I stopped posting here - i'd never become super integrated in the community besides having a few cool conversations here and there.

But I will say that seeing this black and purple and grey and green old shitty 80's arcade forum template brings me back to when I was a teenager and looking for a community to fit in with on the internet. Sydlexia was never really that - but I loved posting here and it's funny how many of the posters here I've ran into on other forums but they just don't know it's me.
