Out of all the movies listed I've only seen three. Harry Potter, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers.

I wasn't even aware of most of the movies under Best Picture existing. The Help is the only one I've even seen anyone I know mention, and I've been meaning to watch it because they claimed it was fairly good. War Horse is the only other one I know anything about and it is all based on the trailer I saw during football one day, seemed like it would be incredibly boring to me. I kind of wonder how movies that no one seems to be talking about at all end up on the list for best of the year. You'd think people would be talking a lot about them if they really were the best.

I've heard good things about Midnight In Paris, and Moneyball was very enjoyable. Just saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on Sunday night and that was fantastic. I hope Oldman wins for that. I hope Christopher Plummer wins as well.

Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors ever, and I hope he finally wins an Oscar. He's one of the best actors working today.

This year's field is rather weak overall, in my opinion. A lot of the movies haven't been seen by a mass audience, so that'll make for a boring Awards Show. I think it'll be one of the lowest-rated ones we've seen.

I loved Tinker Tailer Solder Spy. I'm a sucker for La Carre spy stories and Gary Oldman was fantastic as usual.

I might check that movie out then. Had no idea who Gary Oldman was until I looked him up on imdb, but he seems like he's had some pretty good roles from the few movies that I've seen him in.

The Academy Awards isn't about pandering to the proles, though. If you want that, watch the Golden Globes or the People's Choice Awards.

The Oscars are for film snobs by film snobs. And then there are the SAG Awards, which are essentially Oscar Lites, except they're picked by actors.

Yeah, I wasn't saying it was a bad thing. I prefer the Oscars to all the other shows because of the reasons you stated. I just think it's going to be a down year. Then again, Billy Crystal is hosting so that'll probably draw some people.

Cars 2 was Pixar. Surprised it didn't get nominated.

Also, I notice only nine films were nominated for Best Picture. They're allowed to include ten. Further evidence that the field is weak.

Or it was a divisive year. A film needs to get X votes to be included. A lot of people were pissed Drive was snubbed, especially since that's the sort of film that critics normally love.

I believe Disney asked that Cars 2 not be considered. It was poorly received by critics and Disney wanted to be spared the embarrassment of allowing it to be considered and then not get nominated. Also, Disney/Pixar has won the award the last 4 years, giving them a reasonable smokescreen of humility in asking not to be considered.

Dear God, Transformers 3 better not win for visual effects. In Bay's mind that's pretty much the equivalent of giving him Best Picture.

Out of all the movies listed I've only seen Kung Fu Panda 2, Rango (Rango was slightly better than the Panda IMO), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The only movie I've seen on the list is Midnight in Paris, which I thought was kind of boring and really shallow.

Hugo was great, but something of a conundrum. It's clearly a kid's movie on some level, but I have a hard time picturing any children enjoying it. Certainly all the children in the theatre when I was there were restless and bored. So on that level, it failed. But on the level of who cares who's the intended audience, it was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended.

Haven't seen Tinker's Damn Spy Soldier Sock Darner yet, but looking forward to when I get a chance.
