Sup y'all?! Recently got into a lot of Rush. I've always listened to them but got really into them the past few months. I really dig the complexity of the music and the wide variety with influences from blues, metal, and other progressive bands like Genesis and Yes.

I just wanna know if anyone else here is a Rush fan. If so, do you happen to know of other good bands that sound like Rush, or just other good progressive rock bands? What do you consider progressive rock? Share some of your favorites songs and bands!

I'll post a few of my favorites:

One of my all time favorites.

A lot of people wouldn't consider it progressive rock, but I would since it does some different things, like add in flutes and significant tempo changes, and I don't know why, but it just sort of "sounds progressive".

I'd give some more, but for now I must conquer this door! Farewell.

I like some Rush - the songs which aren't like a bizillion minutes long i.e. freewill, yyz and tom sawyer.

Apart from that i hate most prog so i cannot recommend you anything else. Tales from a Topographic Ocean is good according to my father but it's a Yes album so you prob know it.

Ahh, I see. I actually like some of their longer ones like 2112 and the like.

I haven't heard of that album myself but I'll check it out, thanks.

And you mean the old embed code from YouTube? I'll try that then.

I don't really listen to much prog rock/metal. I really only like Nightwish(only their last two albums ) and Dream Theater. I like some Rush. I love their instrumentals, though.

I've only heard Planet Hell by Nightwish. I discovered it after playing on a Gunz private server. I've listened to a lot of Dream Theater too. I was sad that Mike Portnoy left, but it was kinda bittersweet after I found out his replacement was Mike Mangini,

When I was about 10, my parents took me to a Moody Blues concert. I was bored out of my mind, and annoyed by the hippies doing stupid dances all around. But oh, how I wish I could attend that concert again now, 15 years later. It was wasted on me then.

I know how you feel, but with my dad's old Iron Maiden and Guns N Roses cds... Man I was a stupid kid.

The "progressive" label is sort of nebulous these days, but I like these bands:

Ogre Upstairs: (no YouTubes)
http://www.purevolume.com/ogreup

The Mars Volta:

The World/Inferno Friendship Society: (don't know if they count as prog, they range from complex to really simple...)

Spoonfed Tribe: (also probably not prog-rock but I have to pimp the Texas bands.) Razz

I think everyone was, especially the ones who think they weren't. You live, you grow. Especially musically. I remember thinking that Smash Mouth's Fush Yu Mang was like the fastest music ever made. I had grown up listening to nothing but oldies prior to that.

My brother-in-law is still in high school, and he thinks that "this is gonna hurt" song by Sixx AM that's on the radio now is the hardest and most bad-ass shit ever. It's definitely shit, but try telling him that.

Wow thanks Etch. Those bands were all really good. I'm surprised that Ogre Upstairs isn't more popular.

And Jack, I agree with you. In a way pretty much everything is progressive. Blink-182 went from 2 minute long pop-punk about toilet humor to... Who the hell knows what they are classified as now, about stuff like death and cutting yourself. Bands change a lot I suppose and thus the Progressive title is a bit too vague.

I'm a huge Genesis/Peter Gabriel fan, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time:

You might want to check out their last album Dark Passion Play. Its after they changed singers and became slightly more pop(still pretty heavy though). Its one of the few albums I can listen to without skipping a song.

That and the fact that afterwards Portnoy acted like huge douche, despite the fact he was the one who left

I got into this one band that's considered prog rock, Ashra. I found them on youtube via the song "Sunrain", which is one of my favorite songs ever. The album it's on, New Age of Earth, is really beautiful, I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I noticed that too. What a cunt.

Thanks Cameron. That song was really beautiful. It was kinda simple yet at the same time complex and different. The main keyboard sounds a little like something I wrote a while ago Razz

Hi there, funny that I come back and see a progressive rock thread right after I have a dispute about it. Anyway, I know some stuff you'll like, if you're into progressive metal. Like I mentioned before in my other post, there are three bands that are awesome that I know of. Check out Anathema's stuff on their Hindsight and A Fine Day to Exit albums. There's a band called Porcupine Tree, check out their album called "Fear of a Blank Planet", specifically the song "Anesthetize". And the other band Opeth (they have some death metal influence in some of their songs) but check out Damnation, Heritage and the second half of Ghost Reveries.

A few of my favorite Non-Rush, Prog Rock songs:

Rush's YYZ is still the king of all Prog songs, though, IMHO.

I prefer La Villa Strangiato but YYZ is hard to beat for sure. Thanks for the songs too.

I've been getting back into Tool a lot lately, and I've seen the prog rock title used to describe them. Besides their songs being long & meandering, I didn't really see them that way since their music is more hardcore than the traditional melodic prog rock of the 70s or whenever. "Prog metal" as you say does sound a hell of a lot more appropriate then to me. I still think of them more as industrial, though.

King Crimson is one of my all time favorite bands. Kudos for the Schizoid post.
