Impostor allegedly lived at Stanford

Stanford University officials said they were investigating claims that a young woman passed herself off as a student, talked her way into several dormitories and lived on campus for eight months.

The university would not disclose the woman's name or the circumstances surrounding her alleged ruse, but the school's student newspaper identified her as Azia Kim, 18, of Fullerton.

"We consider these allegations, if confirmed, to be a serious breach of security within the residence halls," Greg Boardman, Stanford's vice provost for student affairs, said in a statement Thursday. "We are conducting a full investigation into what occurred and how security can be improved."

The Stanford Daily, quoting one of Kim's former roommates, said the deception started last September, the day before Stanford's orientation for new students. Two sophomores agreed to let Kim stay in their room after she told them she did not like the roommate she had been assigned.

During the fall and winter terms, Kim allegedly slept in the other women's room or the lounge of the 210-resident dorm. Last month, she moved into another dorm after being referred to another student who needed a roommate.

Resident assistants became suspicious after comparing conflicting statements Kim allegedly gave and contacting the student housing office. Kim was confronted and escorted from campus on Monday, according to The Stanford Daily.

Amy Zhou, Kim's roommate in the second dorm, said Kim apparently got into the room through the window because she never had a key. Kim told other students she was a sophomore majoring in human biology and bought textbooks and studied with friends.

"Personally, I don't feel safe now that Stanford allowed this to happen and that they're not doing anything to ensure the safety of their students," Zhou told the newspaper.

Part of the investigation by campus police and administrators is focused on finding out if Kim took classes, ate meals in the dorm cafeteria or availed herself of other services, said Elaine Ray, a Stanford spokeswoman.

The university plans to forward evidence in the case to Santa Clara County prosecutors to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

"Stanford is a remarkably caring and friendly community," Boardman said. "It is unfortunate that some may be able to take advantage of that trust for their own ends."

Kim's whereabouts or contacts for her family could not be immediately found by The Associated Press.

I wonder what her story was. If she can't afford school, I think Stanford should give her a free ride as long as she's cooperative in helping them assess the massive holes in security that allowed her to live on campus for all that time.

I'm fascinated by that story. I'd also love to know what that was all about.

I've always thought that someone could do this if they tried. College campuses are extremely open places. What's stopping anyone from walking into a classroom and listening to lectures for free? If a student wasn't able to get into a full class, if he/she was really interested they could still go to the class if they wanted to.

It would have been so easy to do this at my school, the smokers kept the front door propped open all night, some people pretty much lived in other people's rooms and never went to their own, people would be having unregistered guests over all the time. Plus, my last year there, I couldn't name half the freshmen and sophmores that I lived with. In fact, if the faculty didn't know me so well, I'd try it.

I'm on Kim's side! STEAL COLLEGE!

It'd be way too easy to sneak into my school, but sneaking into the dorms would be a tad harder...

Sneaking into dorms? At my university, you didn't have to sneak in... back when Valdronius and I started dating, in 2001, I slept in his dorm room (all male dorm) practically every night, unless one of us had an exam the next day. So, I "broke into" his dorm roughly 180 times that year... it's not that difficult, you just walk in the front door.

The Residence Center requires electronic ID cards, unless you're signed in as a guest. Plymouth doesn't have the fancy equipment, but the security guards are another obstacle if they've never seen you before (cause they're bitches).

And it's impossible to sneak in using windows as both building's dorms have them a couple of stories above ground level without a fire escape.

Why do I feel so dirty posting that info? Embarrassed

Now, with that information, I will find where you live, and steal all of your credit cards!

I'll just take a taxi from work.
