Last month it was reported that Trent Reznor was leaving brand new Nine Inch Nails tracks in the stalls on concert venues on lil’ USB drives. Well, those lovable bastards at the Recording Industry Association of America got wind of his little marketing ploy and are pissed!
So what are they gonna do about it?
Well, first they are going after any and all blogs that posted links to the tracks in question, and suing their asses.
The Year Zero campaign, named after the album started in February when fans discovered that highlighted letters inside words on a NIN tour T-shirt spelled out "I am trying to believe." Savvy fans added a ".com" to the five words and found a “thought-provoking, eerie” website. Other associated sites created by 42 Entertainment were soon discovered. Fans started to sharing these music files online, which resulted in entertainment blog Idolator and other sites receiving e-mail from the RIAA, demanding that they remove the MP3s from their sites.
So in other words, the RIAA is going after a viral marketing campaign launched and approved by the label and artist, to protect tracks from being pirated that were meant to be pirated, as approved by the label and artist. The RIAA says, of course, they are here to protect the labels and artists, and…does anyone see the friggin’ circular irony and intense idiocy here?!?!?!
Year Zero is due out on April 17 via Nothing/Interscope.

How is that legal if Reznor has his own label and approved it? If the RIAA can do that, then why haven't they gone after all of the people who have distributed the album "Smashing Pumpkins - Machina II" over the past decade, considering that was only released on 25 LPs and given to select people, and meant to be pirated too?

As the resident NIN-fanatic, I should probably chime in on this.
Reznor has voiced how furious he is about the situation on the Spiral boards. In his eyes, the RIAA and the label have botched his presentation of "Year Zero" a few times over now... first, they put the song titles up on the RIAA catalog site while he was still feeding them to the fans through the ARG a letter at a time. Then they leaked that the CD itself would use a "Thermachrome" technology to change color when you played it. THEN they started going after fans who hosted the intentionally leaked songs from "YZ". I'm also fairly sure the national "listening parties" were label-instigated and had nothing to do with Reznor's own wishes. He has been giving fans at select shows a chance to hear the album in lieu of the typical soundcheck Spiral members were getting last year. This gave him SOME control over fans recording stuff and uploading shitty-quality version of the album to the Net, something that happened en masse once the listening parties began. In response, NIN put the whole album up in a high-quality stream on yearzero.nin.com, on the Spiral, and on the NIN myspace.
In closing, "YZ" marks the end of Reznor's contract with Interscope. Reportedly, he's looking at self-distribution or a much, much smaller, independent label for his future endeavors.
::End insane NIN newsflash::
