Before people bitch and moan about it, it was me who deleted the posts with JEW and Sock. The topic is about driving, NOT about how JEW's gf might or might not be HIV positive or if Sock is gay or not. I thought about splitting the topic into a "JEW's gf has HIV" thread, but I wasn't sure that was appropriate either. Keep it on topic or make a new thread.

I have nothing to do with that. That's most likely a glitch except if you're trying to reply to or edit posts I deleted.

I hate getting the "Sorry, the thread doesn't exist." error while replying to a spammer. That pisses me off.

If I can drive and not die, anyone can.
I got my license as early as legally possible, not because I wanted to drive, but because my family thought I should. I then spent... five or six years HATING it. Unless I absolutely had to, I found an alternate way to get from place to place. I used to have panic attacks anytime I got behind the wheel. Not to mention which, almost everybody I knew become preoccupied with cars and specs and whatnot and I couldn't have given a shit. By and large I still can't.
Then I met my girlfriend, who was in a bad smash up years ago and spent a long time in the hospital with her jaw wired shut on account of it, so her fear surpassed even mine. We both wanted to go places and had no other way to do so, thus I started driving for real. Now it doesn't bug me at all. In fact, at times I kind of like it. Two days ago I finally picked up my first new car.
But, okay, enough rambling. I have to get ready for "Battlestar".

I find it funny that Illinois didn't have a minimum hours behind the wheel requirement when I got my license back in '96. I don't know if that's still the case now...
Or maybe that requirement was waved for me because I took Driver's Ed...

I don't think Massachusetts has one. At least they didn't when I got my license. You just had to have 6 hours driving and 6 hours observing to pass driver's ed, and once you passed you could go for your license. The only restriction on drivers in Mass is that they can't drive with passengers unless one passenger is over 18. I think there may also be a curfew for underage drivers.
I would like to see restrictions put on the elderly; I would be in favor of yearly renewals after the age of 65, as well as a curfew for them as well. What is good for one side of the life cycle is good for the other, especially one that is just as dangerous behind the wheel of a car.

When I read the curfew for the elderly I pictured a bunch of 70-somethings showing up at Town Hall yelling about how they can't go to Bingo anymore because it's over past curfew... it was a very funny daydream.
On a more serious note, though I do agree with the idea of yearly license renewals for the elderly, it's a bit tricky. Most people assume that as you age you vision becomes poor and that you also tend to lose your memory. That is actually not accurate. I think that if this hasn't been done yet, research should be done to determine what age would be most appropriate to commence yearly exams.

65 seems a little young. People are living much longer these days, and 65 is the new 40. I'd probably go with yearly renewals after 75, or maybe even 80.
