I'm making a GIF animation (my first ever, actually) using the GIMP software, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My GIF either has a flashing white frame during the animation, or the 2 images melded together and still animated. I need some help.

Try UnFreez, it's super easy. However, it doesn't have good compression. To use it, your animation frames must already be GIFs. If you need something to convert the frames you're trying to animate to GIFs, try IrFan. Both progs are free and easy findable via searching.

I found out what the problem was in GIMP. The way it processes the images was set to "AUTO", and I had to set it to "COMBINE".
