The X books you should be reading are X-Factor, which I know I've recommended like a million times but I don't think you were picking up yet, and Uncanny X-Men. The X-Men seem to be stuck in like a billion big event style things (Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and now Second Coming), but Uncanny is being written by Matt Fraction who is quite excellent. Matt Fraction and Peter David (X-Factor, and formerly She-Hulk) are a couple of my favorite writers right now, along with Ed Brubaker, Geoff Johns, and in a league far above all of them, Mark Millar. You should basically be reading everything any of those guys is writing. I mean, I HATE Superman, but John's Superman Secret Origins is fantastic.
but yeah, short version, read X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men.

^ Bingo. This event seems like a great place to jump on the Uncanny/X-Factor bandwagon, so jump on I shall. (Might also pick up the Messiah storyline, once it gets traded. If its not already.)

I cannot believe nobody mentioned Naoki Urasawa's masterpieces.
Monster and 20th Century Boys are perfect. Just... perfect!
Another manga/anime series I'd reccomend are: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Hajime no Ippo, One Piece, Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix, Welcome to the NHK, Nana, Axis Powers Hetalia, Basilisk Kouga Ninppo-chou, and well those are the ones I can remember.
I'm not much into western comic books, though...

X-Factor has NOTHING to do with the event. One of the reasons that the book is so good is because Peter David gets to write his story without being harassed by the continuity police of the big storylines. I'm so fucking sick of all these giant stories in both companies.

It doesn't? The event checklist has some issues of X-Factor on it....
...Or was that your point? That is PART of the event, but shouldn't be?

Okay, this isn't enough for its own thread, but I have to put this out there. They just released the artwork for the cover of Batman #700 (coming in June) and it is freaking awesome:
I completely heard the final notes from the Batman: TAS intro when I saw it. (You know..."dun dun dun DUNNN dun...dun....") Great work. Also, I want this in poster size for my room.
