While at Hitler's home, an American soldier takes a book as a souvenir. One of the guy's friends discovers the book has historical importance. Guy's "friend" gets in touch with German authorities looking for the book. US State Department returns the book to Germany, guy gets nothing.

This is bullshit.

I submit to you that the book was legal property of the guy who took on the basis that you can't steal from Hitler. In times of war, it is improper to steal from civilians. But looting the bases/homes of military personnel? Especially those guilty of crimes against humanity? Totally acceptable. If I kill an enemy in combat during an armed conflict sanctioned by my government, I am entitled to whatever useful items he may have. Similarly, if I find his dead body, and find bullets and a wallet on his person, I am entitled to them as well. That's war. This is no different. This man deserves compensation for his book.

I agree about looting in War, it's every man for himself and you gotta do what you gotta do to get yourself and your comrades through it. The guy definitely should be rewarded for turning it in, they should be thankful the guy didn't keep it forever as a secret souvenir for himself and his family.

I agree there was nothing wrong with him taking it. Trophies have been 'liberated' by troops on all sides since war began, ESPECIALLY in WWII when Allied soldiers took tons of Nazi property, weapons, etc as souvenirs. This should not be punishable. (Except in extreme cases, but this was certainly not that.)

However, I do think its stupid to expect something in return for returning it. It doesn't appear that he was asking for/wants anything anyway. He obviously wanted to return it, and it does still technically belong to the German government. *shrug*. I would assume he's smart enough to not have said anything if he really wanted to keep it.

Well, there are no "right hands" in this situation. The right hands are whatever hands it happens to be in. I think the fact that guy didn't demand/want a reward for returning it only reinforces the fact that he deserved one. The man felt bad about STEALING FROM HITLER.

It takes a special type of person to return something he stole from the most evil man who ever lived. And it takes a special type of prick to believe you're more entitled to a book filled picture of art that Hitler planned to steal for his "Hitler is great" museum than guy who found it, to the point where you can't even throw a symbolic reward to the poor guy.

Look at it this way if it makes you feel better, Syd: they German government will probably put it in a WWII museum of some kind, or at least in a collection. Consider it a museum donation (I'm sure he does.)

Besides, I'm sure he'll get something, even if its just a trip to open the exhibit or something like that.

And yes, I do think that the guy should get something in return, like everyone else here. Think of it this way: If he hadn't taken the book, it most likely would have ended up getting destroyed. He ought to get something simply for preserving it for so long, or at least not selling it to some neo-nazi fucktards so they could caress it all day.

This is wild! I've read the news at leicesterwea.com some time ago, and it sounded like something from Onion. Crazy to see that this is, in fact, real. Too bad the guy didn't get any money, because at this point, the book should be considered a treasure
