With Ariel Sharon's recent stroke, the Middle East may be fucked. Sharon was making major headway towards peace with the Palestinians, but who knows what will happen now. This is not good.

Agreed... Sharon catches a lot of bad press as a war criminal and an international terrorist, etc. etc., but I'm of the opinion that that's a little harsh and ultimately untrue. People have very short memories and remember only what they want to... Sharon did a hell of a job keeping his political party as close to moderate as possible, then when it got too right-wing, he left it. I think he might have been the one holding the peace process together.

That being said, I don't think Netanyahu (if he takes power) will be a bad replacement. He's a little more right-wing than Sharon, but I don't think he wants to start any serious shit. I can't imagine he actually WANTS war with the Palestinians, so he'll try to hold on to the shaky truce. Which honestly, is more than I could say for myself, if I were PM of Israel, this would have been my policy from day 1...

Two strikes- We will not attack or annex any of the West Bank or Gaza and will continue to dismantle communities there as long as there are no Palestinian attacks on Israelis. The first attack will come with a warning from the Israeli government. The second means the peace process is off and "Palestinian land" is fair game. Israel whooped the shit out of Palestinians, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon in the 1948 war for independence, if they started shit, Israel could probably hold its own. With that policy, at least Abbas would get a little more serious about reining in Hamas and Islamic Jihad from being such assholes.

I understand the Palestinians gripes, but I never could understand how people call the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians "equally evil." Palestinians bomb buses, Israelis attack known Hamas HQs and leaders. If you couldn't have guessed it by now, I lean toward the Israeli side of the conflict, thought I can understand both sides.

I guess the long and short of what I just wrote is, "Syd, I agree, but I hope not."

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I definitely agree with you about the Israeli tactics vs. Palestinian tactics thing. Steven Spielberg has drawn a lot of criticism from Israelis and praise from Palestinians because his movie Munich portrays the two sides as equally brutal. As you've said, that's a wholy unfair assessment.

I'm not sure if this is a little off-topic, but did you guys see Pat Robertson's allegation that Sharon's stroke was brought on by God's wrath and disappointment that Sharon was pulling Israelies out of Gaza?

If one man deserves a bullet to the skull after a long night of torture and anal rape, it's Robertson.

Yeah, I saw that. Pat Robertson is more than a little fucked in the head. Didn't he also say that God wanted us to assassinate Venezuela's president, Hugo Chavez, a few months ago?

Yep, that's accurate. Pat Robertson needs a glass of STFU. If God ever needed to smite someone for making crazy-ass claims in His name, it's Robertson.
