Two Teens Sought After Killings Spotted
By MARTHA RAFFAELE, Associated Press Writer

LITITZ, Pa. - A missing 14-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man who allegedly killed her parents were spotted at a central Pennsylvania gas station Monday morning, but were not caught, police said.

Police said David G. Ludwig killed 14-year-old Kara Beth Borden's parents, Michael F. and Cathryn Lee Borden, after they and their daughter argued about her curfew. The girl was last seen after the shootings Sunday morning at the family's home in Warwick Township, about 60 miles west of Philadelphia.

"We don't know whether she has been abducted or is willingly a part of this," said Police Chief William Seace. Until they can determine otherwise, police are operating on the assumption that she has been kidnapped.

An Amber Alert for the two of them has been expanded to the entire eastern United States, Seace said Monday.

The girl's sister told authorities she saw the young man kill her father. Kara Beth's 13-year-old sister, Katelyn, told investigators her father and mother were shot after they argued with Ludwig for about an hour, according to a police affidavit filed in court.

"As they got near the front door, Katelyn Borden saw David Ludwig with a handgun pointed toward her father and Katelyn saw David Ludwig pull the trigger, heard a gunshot, and then she ran into the bathroom," the affidavit said.

She heard a second shot — presumably the one that killed her mother — while hiding in the bathroom, it said. Ludwig then ran through the house calling for Kara, she told investigators.

The couple's 9-year-old son ran to the home of neighbors, who called 911, police said earlier.

Police late Sunday issued an arrest warrant for Ludwig on two counts of criminal homicide, one count of reckless endangerment and one count of kidnapping. He was last seen driving his parents' red Volkswagen Jetta.

"We think they're boyfriend and girlfriend," said Seace. "The young girl was out during the night, came home, and her parents confronted her."

Lancaster County Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said Monday that the victims, who were both 50, apparently died of single gunshot wounds to the head. Autopsies were being conducted.

"It's completely insane, completely insane," Kirchner said. "This isn't a Romeo-and-Juliet deal; this is far worse than that."

It was the second violent incident in a week in normally quiet Lititz, a Lancaster County village known for quaint shops, local artists and Sturgis Pretzel House, which bills itself as America's first pretzel bakery.

On Tuesday, police shot and killed 23-year-old Daniel B. Faust hours after he allegedly shot one of three officers who had gone to his home with a traffic warrant. The officer, Jevon M. Miller, was critically wounded.

The Borden family had lived in their home for several years, said neighbor Tod Sherman, 47. Mike Borden worked for a printing company, and the children were home-schooled, he said.

Sherman said the family knew the 18-year-old suspect through a home-schooling network.

Stephanie Mannon, 16, said Ludwig and Kara Borden had been seeing each other secretly.

"Their parents didn't approve of them being together" because of the age difference, she said. "It wasn't because he was a shady character, because he wasn't."

Both Ludwig and Kara Borden maintain Web sites. Hers refers to interests in soccer, art and her Christian faith; his says he enjoys "having soft air gun wars" and claims expertise in "getting in trouble."

Neighbor John Hohman, 40, said his family got a phone call from officials Sunday morning warning them to stay inside. He said he looked out a window and saw police running through the neighborhood. Later, authorities told residents to go to their basements.

"We were really upset. We didn't know what was going on," Hohman said.

BELLEVILLE, Ind. - A man wanted in a Pennsylvania double homicide and apparent abduction of 14-year-old girl was captured Monday after a car he was driving crashed in Indiana following a police pursuit, State Police said.

State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said David Ludwig, 18, was apprehended about 12:30 p.m. EST after a car he was driving crashed about 20 miles west of Indianapolis following a pursuit by State Police.

Bursten said Ludwig was found with the missing girl, 14-year-old, Kara Beth Borden, a daughter of the slain couple, and she was unharmed.

"He's in custody and we have the girl," Bursten said.

If this isn't an advertisement for giving your kids (when you have them) five across the eyes for talking back to you, I don't know what is.

"But dad, I'm 14! I can stay out as LONG AS I WA-"

"You want some too, punk?"

Just kidding. RIP, folks. At least you were trying to parent correctly.
On the bright side, that little shit that shot you is 18, thus, a legal adult.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

According to the current reports, the girl was abducted and not a willing participant in the shooting. How shitty must she feel right now? Her parents yelled at her for staying out way too late with some guy who was 4 years older than her, which is a huge difference when you're fourteen, and what happens? He murders her parents. That's a wicked horrible way to learn that your parents were actually right about something.

Update: the girl's profile has been set to private. Also her friend Kayla deleted her MS account, so you can't actually see Kara underage drinking anymore. Her friend had posted a message in her profile asking people to stop sending messages, so that's probably why.

It wasn't all that interesting anyway. If you want some real entertainment, read the comments that people have left on the guy's last Xanga post. It's all stuff about burning in hell and how he betrayed God. Good times.

It is partially a sad event, but then again I probably wouldn't have liked the people involved (based on probability), so it really doesn't matter to me. It's just another teenage angst bullshit happening.

Maybe in the future when I have kids, I'll beware giving lectures about curfew around my offspring's dates.

RIP Hacker.

Wow, that's so weird... They were once human like you or me... But not anymore.

Anyway, because I'm Mr. Heartless Hollywood, I've already began to fight for the Hollywood option. Already it sounds like the story of The Frightners meets Natural Born Killers. Hopefully, our movie will gross three times of those combined. Youth love rebels.

Why does everyone post underage drug use pictures on their MySpace profiles anyway?

Is it wrong that I just called her "The Pennsylvania Parent Killer"? despite the lack of actual parent killing?

The comments on his MySpace blogs are indeed pretty entertaining. I don't know whether I'm more entertained by the death threats or by assholes who posted stuff like "FUCKING 14 YEAR OLD GIRLS AND KILLING THEIR PARENTS FOR LIFE!!! PREACH ON BROTHA!!!"

They both have different merits, I guess. I also like how his number of friends has steadily dropped all day.

It's a shame the sarcastic people got to his myspace before me, because the first thing I wanted to post when I heard all this was "Way to go, David! Keep on living the dream."

What's a much, much larger shame in more ways than I can measure though is that this shit always happens to the parents that are actually responsible and care about their kids. Sure I think home schooling is a crappy idea and potentially points to them being overprotective, but they were very much right in this case. How come all the terrible parents are the ones outliving their kids until they die of their own vices?

To quote Shakespeare, "The evil that men do lives on, the good is oft interred with their bones." Sure it's not applicable here, but it reminds me of that awesome Iron Maiden song.

I always thought that Shakespeare quote was way off base. When someone dies, people tend to focus in on the good, not the bad. I mean, you never hear someone give a eulogy where they say something like "Johnny, you were a real bastard. I hope you burn in hell." You know what I mean? Any sort of extended seperation generally makes people focus in on the good and forget the bad, that's why some women restart bad relationships.

This news is a few days old, but DAMN:

POLICE: 54 GUNS FOUND IN TEEN'S HOME
David Ludwig charged with killing girlfriend's parents

From Alan Chernoff, CNN
Friday, November 18, 2005; Posted: 11:44 a.m. EST (16:44 GMT)

LITITZ, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Police said Thursday they found 54 firearms and ammunition at the Pennsylvania home of David Ludwig, the 18-year-old accused of killing his girlfriend's parents.

According to a two-page "inventory return" filed Thursday in Lancaster County Court, the search happened Sunday, hours after Michael and Cathryn Borden were found dead in their home.

Listed among the firearms were rifles and handguns. Ludwig lived with his parents in Lititz. His father is a hunter. On the home page of Ludwig's personal Web site is a link to photos showing him disemboweling a deer.

Police said Ludwig, 18, shot the Bordens to death and fled with their 14-year-old daughter, Kara. The killings apparently happened after an argument over the girl staying out all night with Ludwig, police said.

Ludwig was captured a day later after a high-speed chase in Indiana, nearly 600 miles away.

In his company was the girl, whom police are treating as a kidnapping victim in the case.

Ludwig is being held without bail in Lancaster County Prison, awaiting a pre-trial hearing next Wednesday. He is charged with two counts of homicide, one count of kidnapping and one count of reckless endangerment.

If convicted, he could face life in prison. The prosecutor in the case said he's still trying to decide whether to pursue the death penalty.

The girl has not been charged, and police continue to investigate whether she was kidnapped or willingly accompanied Ludwig.

I guess the obligatory statement would be it is always the quiet ones, but in this case as well as most others, it is always the 'normal' ones.

I think I will blame this on the lack of MTV actually showing music videos. I mean, of course they are going to be shitty music videos, but music videos none the less.

It's not totally related to the matter at hand, but somebody recently killed himself after posting a suicide note on MySpace. (a news story)

I don't know what to think of this. Suicide isn't a laughing matter, even if the person in question is an otherwise easy-to-make-fun-of, over-the-top emo kid. Then again, there are people in third-world countries with all kinds of diseases and hardships who live out their lives, so it's difficult to feel truly sorry for the guy.

Either way, it's an interesting conundrum.

I don't know... I'd say suicide is much easier to make fun of than murder and far less cruel. When you take someone else's life, you're a total prick. But when you take your OWN life, you're a selfish little pussy. People who commit suicide do it to try and make the people who hurt them feel guilty. When they do this, they fail to account for the people who actually DO care about them. Anyone who would do that, who would willingly put loved ones through all the grief and misery that comes when someone dies is an awful person.

LUDWIG GETS LIFE!!!

Quote:
Ludwig pleads guilty
Teen gets life in jail for murdering his girlfriend's parents in Lititz home

By Janet Kelley And Cindy Stauffer
Lancaster New Era

Published: Jun 14, 2006 1:42 PM EST

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - David Ludwig, the Lititz teenager who shot and killed his young girlfriends parents last November, pleaded guilty and was sentenced today to life in prison without parole.

The case that sparked weeks of national media attention, in part because of the high-speed chase across Indiana that ended in Ludwigs arrest, closed quietly this morning in a one-hour proceeding in Lancaster County Court.

Neither Ludwig, now 19, nor the family of the victims, Michael and Cathryn Borden, chose to speak in the courtroom about the impact of the double homicide on their lives.

Judge David Ashworth, at the close of the proceeding, told Ludwig that his selfish acts that day had destroyed not only two lives, but Ludwigs own and those of the victims families, and nothing you can do or say will ever change that.

Taking responsibility for what youve done is but one small step, in making amends for those actions, Ashworth said.

Justice was served, Lancaster County District Attorney Donald Totaro said at a press conference after the proceeding, noting that Ludwig will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Life means life. There is no possibility of parole.

Defense attorney Merrill Spahn said at the press conference that by pleading guilty, Ludwig accepted responsibility for the murders.

He is not inherently evil, Spahn said. He is not inherently bad.

But, he added, Ludwig is a very troubled young man, a fact that he said was confirmed by a psychological evaluation, the details of which he declined to reveal.

Kara Borden, the couples then-14-year-old daughter and Ludwigs girlfriend at the time of the murders, also was not in the courtroom this morning. The center of controversy, she had fled the state with Ludwig after the killings. Totaro has said there was no evidence she had anything to do with the murders.

Ludwig, his hair parted in the middle and slicked back into a ponytail, showed no emotion and answered in one- or two-word responses to Ashworths questions explaining his legal rights during the proceeding.

Defense attorney James Gratton said that out of respect for the Borden family, Ludwig would not be making a statement to the court.

Spahn said afterward that Ludwig feels sorrow and remorse for what he did and has said repeatedly he wishes he could undo his actions.

Though Ludwig was prepared to express that remorse today, Totaro said at the press conference, The Borden family members thought it was a little late for any apology. They were not interested in hearing any.

Ludwig decided to plead guilty, the judge was told, rather than risk a jury trial and the possibility that jurors would sentence him to death.

Totaro, who filed notice that if the case went to trial and Ludwig were convicted he would seek the death penalty, said he left the decision to accept a guilty plea to the Borden family.

When Ludwigs attorneys first approached Totaro with the suggestion of Ludwigs pleading guilty in return for life in prison, Totaro said, I discussed that all with members of the Borden family. It was their decision.

Additionally, Ludwig pleaded guilty to three additional charges, including recklessly endangering another person, statutory sexual assault and a firearms violation.

For those offenses, Ludwig was given the maximum prison sentence of 9!-W to 19 years in prison, which is to be served consecutively to the two life sentences.

Totaro added that restitution has been set at $125, 515, including the cost of the headstone, future counseling costs and damage to the Bordens property.

Early on the morning of Nov. 13, the Bordens apparently caught their youngest daughter sneaking back into their home on Royal Drive, after spending the night with Ludwig.

The Bordens, both 50, summoned Ludwig to their home, Warwick Township Police Detective Lt. Ed Tobin, told the judge.

Ludwig arrived around 7 a.m., carrying several weapons wrapped in a blanket. Michael Borden told him to leave the weapons outside, which he did, Tobin said, and then was invited into the house.

They talked for three-quarters of an hour, Tobin said, with Michael Borden concluding by forbidding Ludwig from dating his daughter and instructing him to go home and talk to his parents about the matter.

Ludwig would later tell investigators that he sat there for about five or 10 minutes, waiting for some sort of sign from Kara about what he should do, Tobin said.

Receiving no indication from Kara, Ludwig told investigators that it was he alone who made the decision to kill Karas parents, Tobin said.

I wanted to shoot them, Tobin quoted Ludwig as saying, and I did.

Ludwig followed Karas father to the front door, pulled out a gun he had hidden in his pants and shot Michael Borden in the back of the head.

He then stepped into the living room and shot and killed Cathryn Borden, who was sitting in a chair, Tobin said.

Meanwhile, Kara and her older sister, Katelyn, now 16, fled the house, as did their 11-year-old brother, David.

Ludwig fled the scene, stopping long enough to pick up Kara, whom he spotted running down the street.

Police, believing that Kara might have been kidnapped, issued a nationwide Amber Alert in an attempt to find the young girl.

The next day, Tobin said, Indiana State Police troopers spotted the suspects car and began a brief, high-speed chase that ended when Ludwig crashed his vehicle into a tree and was taken into custody.

The teenagers, who were not hurt, were later flown back to Lancaster County. Ludwig went straight to jail, and Kara was returned to her family.

Ludwig gets life
Murdered girlfriend's parents

By Brett Lovelace, Intelligencer Journal Staff

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - David G. Ludwig pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing his girlfriend's parents and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

By pleading guilty, the 19-year-old escapes the possibility of getting the death penalty, which prosecutors said they would seek if Ludwig was convicted of first-degree murder.

His attorney said Ludwig wanted to avoid spending years on death row in virtual solitary confinement. Merrill M. Spahn said his client wants to pursue a college education and eventually counsel other inmates.

"This is something that David wants to do within the limited scope of the prison system, " Spahn said. "Coming from the background that he does, counseling and even the ministry is a logical path for him."

Spahn and attorney James Gratton spent months negotiating the plea agreement with Lancaster County District Attorney Donald R. Totaro.

A hearing to decide which evidence could be used during the trial was scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Instead, Ludwig decided to end the case, which drew nationwide attention.

Ludwig on Nov. 13, 2005, shot and killed Michael and Cathryn Borden with a .40-caliber handgun inside their Warwick Township home because they had forbidden him from dating their then-14-year-old daughter, Kara Borden.

Following the killings, Ludwig and Kara fled Lancaster County in a Volkswagen, sparking an intense manhunt. He was arrested 28 hours later in Indiana after crashing the car during a high-speed chase.

Ludwig gave detectives a detailed confession after his arrest. Authorities determined Kara, although she went voluntarily with Ludwig, was not involved in any murder plot.

"Today, based on our advice, David Ludwig made a very difficult decision to accept a sentence of life in prison for his actions, " Spahn said. "Make no mistake: Today, David Ludwig is accepting complete responsibility for his conduct.

"He is truly remorseful for the pain that he caused the Borden family, his own family and this community."

The surviving members of the Borden family also wanted to avoid a trial, Totaro said.

"The Borden family agreed unanimously that in this case they wanted to proceed with the certainty of a first-degree murder plea and life in prison for the defendant, " Totaro said. "As a result, justice was served. This defendant was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder.

"He will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole, and as the judge indicated, in Pennsylvania life means life. There is no possibility of parole."

Lancaster County Judge David L. Ashworth admonished Ludwig during the hourlong hearing.

"By your useless and selfish acts, you destroyed and permanently altered the lives of countless people, " Ashworth said. "Nothing you can do or say will ever change that."

Ludwig -- wearing a charcoal-colored suit and a blue shirt, and with his long dark hair pulled back into a ponytail -- did not respond.

He planned to apologize for the slayings but was told the Borden family did not want to hear it.

"This was an intentional, deliberate, pre-meditated killing, " Totaro said. "This was a classic case of murder in the first degree."

"In speaking with Borden family members, they really felt it was a little late for any sort of an apology, " Totaro said. "They were really not interested in hearing an apology."

Ludwig pleaded guilty to two counts of homicide, recklessly endangering another person, statutory sexual assault and a firearms violation.

Ashworth sentenced Ludwig to two consecutive life terms, plus 91-w to 19 years in state prison. He also was ordered to pay more than $125, 000 in restitution.

The bill includes the cost of the Bordens' burials, counseling for the Borden children and damage to the home at 15 Royal Drive in Warwick Township, where the murders happened.

During the hearing, Gratton and Spahn conceded they reviewed 2, 000 pages of investigative reports that included statements by 170 witnesses, but were unable to find a viable defense for Ludwig. Their only possible defense against the death penalty is a mental disorder that Gratton said was diagnosed while Ludwig was in prison.

"David is not inherently evil. He is not inherently bad. He is a very troubled young man, a teenager who in a sense of desperation made very horrific and very regrettable choices, " Spahn said.

"We did have psychological work done, and there is plenty of information as a result of that which could've been used if this case had gone to a death penalty proceeding."

Spahn declined to specify what mental disorder afflicts Ludwig.

Kara Borden did not attend the hearing. She has been living in another state since November, said her attorney, Robert Beyer.

There is no clear reason for why Kara left with Ludwig after the shootings, Beyer said.

"Kids make rash decisions under stress that are basically not understandable, " Beyer said. "I've been bothered with the way in which people in our community have maligned Kara regarding her involvement in the murders through fictitious speculation on Internet blogs and in coffee-shop conversation."

Beyer said he spoke with Kara on the telephone Tuesday night about the guilty pleas and planned to again speak with her today.

"Kara wants to recapture her teenage years, " Beyer said. "She just finished ninth grade at a public school and misses her friends and soccer buddies in Lancaster County."

While Kara begins summer vacation, Ludwig will remain in Lancaster County Prison until the state Department of Corrections determines in which prison he will serve his life sentence.

Avoiding death row was a key factor behind Ludwigs' decision to plead guilty, Spahn said.

"Inmates on death row are kept in a cell for about 23 hours a day and have little or no direct contact with anyone but their legal representative, " Spahn said. "A portable shower is even hooked up to their cell."

Ludwig received his high school diploma last week and plans to enroll in college correspondence courses. He also wants to tutor inmates and provide counseling on decision-making skills, Spahn said.

Poor Kara. She needs a lawyer with PR experience. I mean really who says something like that?

"Well kid, your crazy ass boyfriend killed your parents. Now get out there and recapture those teenage years!"

I would've picked death row myself... But that's just me.
