Four brown horses in their stalls,
Snug within the stable walls,
Tell of his birth: "'Twas long foretold
By chosen men in days of old."
Five gray donkeys speak with pride,
Remembering one who gave a ride:
Thoughts: One hen, two doves, three wise men, four brown horses, five donkeys... I bet you've figured out where this is going. Apparently author Gail Wiersum wasn't content with her confused attempt at a story being just about Jesus and animals, so she threw in some basic counting for good measure. The book isn't fucking billed as a counting book, so I don't know what she was trying to accomplish. I'm sure Richard Scarry wrote several books on the subject of numbers that are far more clever than anything Gale Wiersum could have ever come up with. And let's face it: counting with Lowly Worm is far more fun than counting with common barnyard animals. Sure, these animals have God's love, but Lowly had a hat with a feather in it. I don't know about you, but when I'm faced with the choice between a cool hat and Jesus, the hat usually wins out.
